SCALE In the main, 1:100 and 1:200 scales are used for super-detailed presentation models. Smaller scales (1:500 or less) are primarily used for town planning, topographic, and large commercial and industrial site studies. Larger scales lend themselves to use as sales aids, moveable block and massing studies, interior and landscape design. Consultation with the modelmaker regarding scale is most important to best determine the clients needs, i.e. model portability, amount of detail shown, and model usage.

ELEVATIONS Accurate drawings of all elevations reproduced to model scale are required. perspective illustrations and artists renderings are extremely helpful.

FLOOR PLANS to scale of all floors, roof and parking areas.

SITE PLANS to scale of site and all surrounding areas (including roads). Relative levels and site contours must be shown. Engineers contour map, site and aerial photographs very helpful.

COLOURS of all painted or coloured parts of model, preferably with colour swatches, Pantone, Resene, or British Standard colours specified.

GRAPHICS Information and logo samples for title blocks, signage, etc.

LIGHTING Consider interior lighting to feature particular areas or floors and for night photography; exterior lighting for realistic display and photography or illustrating sun/shadow angles.

COVER Type and size specified. Clear acrylic covers are usually necessary for display models. Packing crate may be necessary if transport over long distances is required.

END USES Consider some of the following:

  • Advertising Photos
  • PR News releases

PHOTOGRAPHY & PRINT Reproduction transparencies, digital files and colour prints can be delivered with the model if preplanned. Photo montage is often used for aerial and in-situ information.

VIDEO Video production has become an essential part of the marketing package. Early planning discussions are necessary to ensure a smooth production workflow.

BRIEFS Regular and close dialogue with the architect, developer or designer throughout the whole project is essential. Allow time for studio meetings.
